At the United Nations, Malta’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ian Borg has made a speech declaring that Russia has to pay reparations for its invasion of Ukraine and should unequivocally exit Ukraine, immediately. This is a far cry from Malta’s previous position demanding Russia and Ukraine “to solve the conflict diplomatically”, a position which Malta framed ever since Evarist Bartolo was Foreign Minister. Malta is currently chairing the United Nations Security Council.
This is good news and a sign that Malta is finally coming to terms with what is really happening Ukraine, but we should not be content that Malta has made this statement. This is just the first step. Now, the Maltese government should be pressured to take the seizure of Russian assets more seriously, and we should also make sure that Malta’s wording demanding Russia to leave Ukraine, also includes Crimea.
